Alexandra also worked at the Toledo Museum of Art’s Glass Pavilion as a Glass Facilitator where she taught hands-on glassmaking classes and did public glassblowing demonstrations and narrations for museum visitors. Fresch received her BFA from The Ohio State University in 2012, but her passion for glass began while she was still in high school and took a chance Fibers & Glass Class. The majority of Fresch’s work is inspired by nature, fashion, and the Victorian era.
Artist Statement
“Glass has always attracted me as it is unlike any other medium when it comes to its transparency and reflection of light. However, as my art progressed, I kept searching for ways to create more delicate sculptures in glass which seemed impossible, until I learned the technique of flameworking. Using this glassmaking technique, with torches and a special type of glass, I was finally able to create large scale delicate sculptures.
I began using glass to make corsets and feminine accessories, bending the glass to mimic the delicate patterns of lace and embroidery. I have always been influenced by the Victorian Era and fashion, especially the extravagant accessories that are now only seen in period piece costumes. I continue to develop my techniques and push the limits of my glass pieces. When people engage with my work, they are taken aback by their delicacy, perceiving them as extremely fragile and therefore the thought that they are wearable is inconceivable. This creates a truly surreal experience for the viewer when interacting with my glass art.” Alexandra Fresch
